JNPA – Navi Mumbai Project

Mumbai Gardens

Mumbai is our home a vibrant coastal city that has witnessed rapid infrastructure development, often at the cost of green and public spaces. In 2019, Emerald Sustainable Foundation initiated its first urban mini-forest at Colaba Woods, Cuffe Parade, planting 5,000 trees with the support of friends and family. This project became our learning ground and a catalyst for larger urban restoration efforts.

As the forest matured, its impact became evident across the neighbourhood. With CSR support from IndusInd Bank and Kotak, the forest expanded to over 25,000 trees. Today, the park experiences temperatures that are 4–5 degrees cooler, even on sunny days, with dense canopies beginning to form. The green buffer has also helped significantly reduce odours from nearby areas, improving overall air quality and livability.

Encouraged by these results, Emerald partnered with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), corporates, and philanthropists to replicate this model across the city. To date, over 50,000 trees have been planted across five parks Colaba Woods, CPRA Greens, Jog Gardens, Patil Udyan, and Thakrey Udyan with support from HNIs, IndusInd, Kotak, Marvel Drugs, Raman and Weil, and Believe Foundation.

Mumbai continues to hold immense potential for creating more urban mini-forests that cool the city and improve quality of life. We invite individuals, organisations, and corporates to join us in expanding these green sanctuaries and helping the city breathe better.
